In Houston, the home builders really stuck it to us in the 60′s 70′s and 80′s! The built our homes with LP Masonite siding, which turned out to be a disaster of a flop.

Think of the logic: We live in a wet, humid climate and they chose siding made of compressed paper for our Houston homes. Ridiculous because, as you know, paper absorbs water. As soon a the paint was breached…by a scratch or by impact, the siding was exposed to our nearly 4 feet of rain per year and constant (9 months anyway) of very high humidity.

Well, thankfully, the engineering geniuses over at James Hardie came up with the ideal solution. Hardie Zone 10 Hardieplank Siding. Houston engineered because it is impervious to water and rot. Termites can’t eat it either!

This siding product is what is called Fiber Cement Siding. Houston residents just call it Hardieplank though that is really just one of the brand names used by James Hardie. When Houston residents are chucking out the old LP Masonite or rotten wood, they are replacing with the various products produced by James Hardie. Consider these:

  • HardiePlank siding – This is the brand name covering the lap siding products. They come in a variety of  “exposures” (width of board showing) and have several grain and surface styles such as Select CedarMill, Colonial Rough Sawn and Smooth.
  • HardiTrim – This name is for Hardie’s brand of trim products like the 1×4 corner boards and window trim pieces.
  • HardiSoffit – You can get this fiber cement soffit product in either vented soffit or un-vented soffit. Soffit is the horizontal planks you see under the eaves and the vented soffit works in tandem with your roof ventilation system to allow air to enter your attic space.
  • HardiPanel – Panels are used for both siding and for ceiling material. There are several finishes and grain patterns here too.

The one common thing they have in common is the fiber cement composition and primer coverage package. The pre-primed surface saves prep time on-site, reduces mess and helps to hold paint on to the surface twice as good as wood!
